What is Reiki?

Reiki is the name given to a system of natural healing which evolved in Japan from the experience and dedication of Dr Mikao Usui (d. 1926). The word Reiki is comprised of two Japanese words - Rei which means "spirit, miraculous, divine" and Ki which is "life force energy". So Reiki can be interpreted as "spiritually guided life force energy." This system of energetic healing is administered by laying hands on or above the body. Reiki treats the whole person — physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual — resulting in many beneficial effects that include feelings of relaxation, peace, and an overall sense of well-being.

Is Reiki right for me?

Reiki is a natural and safe method of energetic healing that everyone can use. While Reiki is spiritual in nature, there is no belief system attached to it. Anyone can receive or learn to give a Reiki treatment, the only prerequisite is the desire to be healed. Reiki has been effective in helping with a variety of illnesses and imbalances. Reiki flows to the areas of need, soothing pain and supporting the body's natural ability to heal itself. It supports all forms of treatment, both orthodox and complementary.

What are the benefits of Reiki?

Reiki promotes deep relaxation. During this state of being some people experience the following additional positive "side effects":

Increased energy

Increased sense of calm and peace

Increased patience

Reduced anxiety

Reduced tension

Reduced depression

Elevated self esteem

Improved sleep

Improved digestion

and general pain reduction

Each person is different and the results are not hard and fast as Reiki is a gentle whole body approach to healing.

How do I prepare for my treatment?

The method of receiving a Reiki treatment from a practitioner is a very simple process. The recipient simply settles into a comfortable and relaxed position, preferably laying down, but sitting can be accommodated. There is no need to remove any clothing as Reiki will pass through anything, even plaster casts. The practitioner gently places their hands non-intrusively in a sequence of positions which cover the whole body. The whole person is treated rather than specific symptoms. A single treatment typically lasts approximately one hour.

What is the significance of 'Reiki lineage'?

Reiki practitioners act as channels for the subtle energy that exists above and around us at all times. They receive attunements directly from a practicing Reiki Master Teacher to amplify their own ability to open to and direct this energy for healing. This attunement process also propagates and authenticates the lineage of the system and its ways.
